At the close of 2022, LAShoutout reached out to me for an interview about my business, marking a significant moment in my transition from passion to professional. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my journey, insights, and the lessons I've learned along the way. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation.
We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Nishioka, and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As a landscape photographer from Kaua'i, risk-taking is a significant aspect of my career. The photography industry in Hawaii is highly competitive, requiring unique creativity and adventurous perspectives. I often push my limits by tackling challenging trails, hiking mountains up to 3000 feet, and freediving 35 feet below the Pacific Ocean. Without taking risks, you remain in your comfort zone and miss out on transformative opportunities. Although taking risks doesn’t guarantee success, it provides valuable experiences and knowledge, helping you make better decisions.
Can you introduce us to your business and what sets you apart?
Nataliearth Photography is dedicated to filling empty spaces with inspiration. My mission revolves around three core ideas: Creativity, Community, and Environment.
Creativity: My goal is to capture and present the beauty of the natural world through my lens. The thrill of adventure fuels my creativity, leading me to explore and photograph diverse landscapes. My images are crafted to brighten homes and inspire viewers, reflecting my deep connection to Kaua'i.
Community: Growing up on Kaua'i, I value the local culture and community deeply. I give back by supporting local fundraising events and volunteering with non-profits.
Environment: In response to environmental challenges, I practice sustainability by using recycled materials for packaging and striving to become plastic-free and achieve net-zero emissions.
Photography has been a passion since my childhood, evolving from early experiences with a Nintendo DS and a Finepix Z Fuji Film Camera to a Canon T3i and finally, a Sony a7. My parents have been instrumental in supporting my passion.
During high school and college, I honed my skills in Lightroom and developed a vibrant, adventurous editing style. The pandemic provided the opportunity to turn my hobby into a business, leading to the launch of Nataliearth LLC in 2021. It was a challenging yet rewarding journey of learning and growth.

If a friend were visiting Kaua'i for a week, what would you recommend?
I’d take them on hikes to my favorite spots, like Kokee and the North Shore. We'd enjoy delicious local food from Ishihara’s Market and Japanese Grandma’s Cafe, hike scenic trails, and savor homemade chai tea at Kokee Lodge. In the North Shore, we'd explore Hanalei Beach, learn to surf, and enjoy sushi from The Dolphin. A day of snorkeling and watching the sunset would cap off our adventure.
Who deserves credit and recognition?
I’m deeply thankful to my parents, Kent and Shelley Nishioka, for their unwavering support. Special thanks to my Uncle Leroy Sakaguchi for his business guidance, and to my friends and adventure buddies who inspire and support me. I’m also grateful to Emily Szurgot for introducing me to Shoutout LA and to Kaylee Tayler for her encouragement. Most importantly, I appreciate all my customers, whose support makes my journey possible.
