What a beautiful way to begin a new year. On the first morning of 2023, I made my way to the beach before the day had fully begun. As the first rays of sunlight appeared over the horizon, I watched the kai—the sea foam—gently wash across the sand, slowly erasing the footprints left behind from the year before. There was something about watching them disappear that felt symbolic. A quiet reminder that we don’t have to carry everything with us into a new year. Some things can simply be left behind, making room for something new.
The sunrise slowly transformed the sky into soft shades of blue, lavender, and purple, while the small waves rolled gently onto the shore. I stood there listening to the ocean and taking it all in, feeling grateful for the simple privilege of being there. I wasn’t the only one who had come to welcome the first morning of the year. A few other beachgoers had gathered along the shoreline, quietly watching the same sunrise. As the warmth of the sun finally reached our skin, there was a shared feeling of gratitude in the air. We were all simply there—breathing, watching, and beginning again.
