As the new taro is planted, the blue sky reflects below the taro lo’i (patch). Taro was first brought to Hawaii by Polynesian settlers on their canoes. Taro is an essential local staple in Hawai’i. Similar to a potato, it has to be cooked and steamed. Eating it raw is toxic, causing itchy lips, throat, and tongue. All parts of the taro can be eaten, including the leaves to make lū‘au, a popular Hawaiian dish with pork/squid.
