Never in my life have I seen mountains, trees, and water come together in a landscape so beautiful. It was the kind of place I had only ever imagined in dreams or seen in the animated worlds of Studio Ghibli—somewhere between My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke. Standing here gave me that same warm, peaceful feeling I get at the end of a Ghibli film, when you’re left with a quiet sense of wonder and happiness.
This hidden gem along Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve felt almost untouched by time, accessible only by sea or air. A natural spring cascaded down from the snow and ice into the deep emerald water below, while small pieces of iceberg drifted slowly across the surface, melting into the glacial waters. Tall pine trees and lush greenery clung to the rocky mountainsides, softening the rugged landscape. The water was so still that the mountains seemed to linger in its reflection, creating a perfect mirror of greens, grays, and blues.
For a moment, it didn’t feel like a real place—it felt like a scene from an animated world brought to life. A quiet, happy mountain, wild and untouched, simply existing as it has for generations. I hope places like this remain protected, preserved, and allowed to stay exactly as they are.
