Hula honu is an ancient dance imitating a turtle's movements.

While wandering along the beach with my friend River, I spotted a group of rocks near the shallows that I initially mistook for honus (turtles). Intrigued, we decided to approach them more closely with our snorkel masks. However, we were careful not to make any forceful movements toward these gentle creatures and grounded ourselves in the sand to withstand the strong currents. As we got closer, we could see that they were honu, swimming gracefully through the water and eating limu (seaweed) as it drifted by. Occasionally, they would surface for air, and we could see their beautiful shells glinting in the sunlight. Witnessing these creatures doing their thing in their natural habitat was a breathtaking and unforgettable sight.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to capture this moment. However, I want to remind everyone about respecting Hawaiian turtle and monk seal regulations. When encountering these animals in the water or sand, please avoid chasing, touching, feeding, or using flash photography. Similarly, avoid making loud noises that could disturb them, and always maintain a respectful distance. If they swim away, do not chase or follow them; if they sleep on the beach, leave them be. Let them enjoy their space, and do not try to interfere. If they choose to swim near you, keep your distance and appreciate this unforgettable experience.
