Over the weekend, I embarked on a mission to spot one of your favorite animals - the Hawaiian Monk Seal. This fascinating creature is known in Hawaiian as 'īlio holo I ka uaua, which translates to "dog that runs in rough water." These seals are one of the most endangered species in the world, with only about 1,570 remaining throughout the Hawaiian islands archipelago.
Unfortunately, these seals are threatened by various sources, the most significant of which is human activity. For example, toxoplasmosis, an infectious parasite found in cat feces and undercooked meat, poses a substantial risk to these seals. Furthermore, intentional killing and the fishing industry also pose significant threats to their survival.
If you are lucky enough to spot one of these fantastic creatures, giving them plenty of space and admiring them from a distance is essential. They are a precious and vulnerable species, and it's our responsibility to protect them and ensure their survival for future generations.
