As our cruise ship slowly departed the port of Juneau, I sat on our balcony taking in the mountains one last time. The clouds were light, wispy, and foggy, and the cool blue sky hinted at the possibility of an unforgettable sunset. I quickly grabbed my camera, added a few more layers to keep warm, and ran up several flights of stairs to the back of the ship. Within minutes, the sky transformed from icy blues into brilliant shades of gold, orange, pink, and red. It was one of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever witnessed outside of Hawaiʻi. Sweethearts held hands, families gathered for photos, and local fishing boats quietly made their way across the water. I couldn’t help but wonder what it must feel like to come home from a long day at sea beneath a sky like this. What a time to be alive. This summer has reminded me to slow down, look up, and fall in love with sunsets all over again.
