The half moon, the open sky, the layers of mountains stretching endlessly into the distance, snow-covered peaks rising above them, and the deep emerald waters below.

Sometimes, I don’t need anything more than these simple, wild elements coming together in one quiet moment. There is something incredibly powerful about a landscape that doesn’t need to be altered or complicated to leave an impression. The mountains speak for themselves, the water brings a sense of calm, and the half moon hangs effortlessly above it all.

This photograph is a simple and straightforward view of the mountains in Alaska, but standing there, it felt like anything but ordinary. The immense scale of the mountains against the softness of the moon created a moment that felt almost untouched—a small glimpse into a much larger world.

I found myself wondering what the half moon must see night after night as it travels across the sky. How many mountains has it watched rise from the horizon? How many rivers, forests, and quiet waters has it illuminated? How many people have stood beneath it, just as I did, looking up and feeling small beneath something so vast?

There is a kind of beauty in being reminded that we are only passing through these places. The mountains will remain, the waters will continue to move, and the moon will keep returning to the same sky.

For a moment, all I could do was stop and take it in.

The half moon above.
The mountains beyond.
The emerald water below.

Just the wild elements of Alaska, exactly as they were—and exactly as they needed to be.
